The Independent Case: Why Cheer Needs Media It Doesn’t Own

Competitive cheer is one of the fastest-growing youth sports in the country. But almost all of its media — the recaps, the rankings, the “teams to watch” — is produced by companies that also run the competitions and sell the uniforms.

The conflict is structural

When your owner profits from the events you cover, it’s hard to cover them honestly. Which brands get promoted, which storylines get told, which gyms get featured — all of it bends, even subtly, toward the bottom line.

The athletes deserve a voice that answers to them — not to a promoter.

What independent means here

ICON Cheer isn’t owned by an event producer or an apparel company. Our gym and coach directories exist to help families, not to sell placement. Our recognition franchises are chosen on merit. That independence is the whole point.

It’s also fragile — independent media only survives if the community supports it. That’s the deal we’re offering: honest coverage, in exchange for a community that shows up.
